A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
