The English along with Wales Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by sporting icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales find themselves placed in an identical pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a major early clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing echoes their memorable meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a pool together, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they claimed a convincing victory, with their opponents failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, both impressed as underdogs in France, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and world number one the Springboks until the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans win their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the pools conclude according to the current global standings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from both England and the Irish all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 round for the first time in the competition's history.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
